Our Mission

Vision Statement

Open Theatre Project creates theatre that fosters engaged communities, cultivates empathy and forges authentic relationships.  We recognize that many of the traditional operating principles of OTP and the American theatre have been rooted in white supremacist structures. At OTP, we commit to transparency in exposing and removing these structures in all aspects of our company.

Guiding Principles

Anti-Racism

We will constantly work towards anti-racist action; by identifying, resisting, and removing white supremacist structures both in and out of the rehearsal room.

Community Engagement

We are committed to community relationships that are transformative rather than transactional.

Intersectionality

We are committed to honoring the intersecting identities of our company members, creative collaborators, and audiences.

Transparency

We are committed to being completely democratic and transparent in how we create, foster and pay for our work.

Our Home at St. John's Church in Jamaica Plain

8 years ago, a few members of OTP walked into the beautiful space at St. John's Church off Roanoke Ave in the heart of Jamaica Plain and simply asked, "Would you ever consider letting a theatre company produce a show here?"

As the performing arts company in residence, St. John's has been our biggest partner, not only providing a home for us to rehearse and perform, but a community foundation that has allowed us to flourish.    Open Theatre Project is also the proud producer of the JP Concert Series, founded by St. John's minister of Music, Ken Brooks.

Open Theatre Project strives to be....

... a welcoming and freeing space. It's a space that allows people of different backgrounds, experience levels and more to come together and collaborate.

... a place where any one, no matter who you are, can create, explore and be heard in an honest and invested community.

...theatre that is inclusive and inviting to the richness of narratives that the human experience has to offer. Not only is open theatre inclusive in those narratives, but it is also cognizant of how there is a necessity to making those narratives accessible to all. In short, theater that is for all, about all, and accessible to all.
